Great achievements and exciting projects are taking place in the Northern Territory within the mining and exploration sector.
On 15th September, the 10th Anniversary Mining the Territory Conference successfully closed its curtains. For two days, delegates of the conference gathered at the Darwin Convention Centre, discussed and explored the current and future opportunities in the Northern Territory’s mining sector, following the recent change of government.
Newmont Tanami Operation managed the transformation of the business increasing safety performance and growth, and successfully led the first stage expansion works while preparing for exciting next stages of expansion. Energy Resources Australia analysed 35 years of production at Ranger and the changes in the nuclear energy market.
Newmarket Gold announced exciting growth activities and developments with the Maud Creek deposit near Katherine, and we are looking forward to hearing about upcoming developments in the near future for Vista Gold Mt Todd Project, and also Ark Mines Mt Porter Project.
Major project developers Arafura Resources, Tellus Holdings and Newmont discussed procurement strategies and how to successfully involve first and mid tier contractors with the valuable contributions of expert project manager Bryan Scruby. NT miners and project leaders are engaged with local and regional businesses and are pleased to partner with organisations such as the NT Industry Capability Network and Chambers of commerce to bridge gaps and meet required industry standards.
One of the highlights of the conference was to hear about the newly opened Harts Range Garnet Mine. Australian Abrasive Minerals commented on the project timeline, mining processes and innovative technology applications, and explained how the mine is contributing the local economy with strong community involvement and indigenous employment levels, training and mentorship programmes and local contractors and service providers.
BMA Coal delivered a unique presentation on the role of the new generation of piloted aircraft systems and their contributions to improving mine safety and performance. We also had the opportunity to discuss the design of mine wast landforms for closure to improve long-term stability.
NT Geological Survey and Geoscience Australia presented key programmes and initiatives that support exploration in Northern Australia and outlined the value and importance of collaborating with the sector to facilitate new exploration investments, discoveries and projects. New tools and technologies supporting exploration are key to successes and Emmerson Resources demonstrated the value of new technologies to enhance ‘Prediction and Detection’ in Tennant Creek. Explorations updates highlighted successes from PNX Metals, Marindi Metals, Korab Resources and ABM Resources. Auctus Minerals provided a unique contribution discussing their private equity strategy and innovative mining and processing approach to developments.
In conclusion, the 2016 Mining the Territory Conference shared positive mining and exploration outlooks and outlined the importance of local engagement, operation efficiency and safety, and innovations and technologies.
