‘Creativity vital’ for 21st century leadership development

9 Sep 2013, by Informa Insights

Leadership development must prioritise a creative and hands-on approach, with businesses demanding more from their change management initiatives.

This is according to a new report by Deloitte, titled ‘Resetting Horizons: Human Capital Trends 2013’, which highlighted the most important leadership skills.

The global survey, which included Australia, outlined trends that are driving mission-critical business and human capital decisions.

David Brown, Deloitte consulting human capital partner, said there has been a noticeable change in the way executives evaluate the success of projects.

“It is now all about results. New 21st century leadership models demand hands-on, creative leaders,” he stated.

“Executives now gauge the success of a change program by how it solved a specific business problem, not merely whether it was implemented.”

However, Mr Brown implied Australian businesses do not quite have the sense of urgency that other global firms possess.

He noted that 80 per cent of companies in the country believe organisational acceleration is highly relevant, compared with 86 per cent of leaders worldwide.

His comments may encourage Australians to pursue leadership training in order to gain a competitive advantage over other businesses nationwide.

“[Leaders] need to work directly with customers and understand how to empower, engage, and inspire global teams,” Mr Brown stated.

Deloitte claimed that Australia must embrace change and adopt initiatives that will facilitate smoother businesses processes that will deliver improved results.

The organisation said there are a number of key drivers behind organisation acceleration, including 24/7 globalisation, the demand on leaders to deliver results and technology developments.

“In my experience many change programs fail to deliver the outcomes the organisations seek,” Mr Brown said.

The reasons for this differ, but wasted time and effort are a common factor, he added, so businesses should look to new big data solutions to enhance their analytical capabilities.
