With International Women’s Day just around the corner, the Queensland Government is promoting the number of opportunities available for female leadership development.

International Women’s Day takes place on March 8, and Queensland’s communities minister Tracy Davis said the state is embracing the occasion.

“Queensland is a great state with great opportunities for all people and particularly for women,” she explained.

“This is especially so as the Newman government delivers on its election commitment to grow a four pillar economy based on tourism, agriculture, resources and construction.”

According to Ms Davis, there are many ways in which women can progress their careers in these industries, providing very rewarding experiences, as well as personal and professional development.

The government admitted that the resources sector has traditionally struggled to employ and retain female workers, but this is an area that is being improved.

The Women in Resources Sector Strategy and Queensland’s Supporting Women Scholarships program have been implemented to produce more opportunities in the industry.

Ms Davis said: “The Newman government is growing Queensland’s four-pillar economy to create real opportunities for women in this great state, and I encourage women to embrace these opportunities.”

The minister said the current government has moved away from previous methods of promoting opportunities for women in the resources sector. She argued that this had largely involved flashy advertising campaigns with pictures of women in hard hats.

Instead, the government will be sponsoring International Women’s Day events such as the Black, Bold and Beautiful Indigenous Women’s Luncheon and the UN Women’s breakfast.

These are just two of the important occasions taking place throughout the state on the day, Ms Davis added.

This year, the theme of International Women’s Day is ‘Inspiring Change: For Greater Awareness of Women’s Equality’ and calls for people to challenge the status quo of gender bias across all walks of life.
