Achieving better Emotional Intelligence

5 Aug 2013, by Informa Insights

Emotional IntelligenceEmotional Intelligence (EI) is a term that refers to a person’s ability to perceive, manage and understand their emotions, as well as those of other people.

Having a high EI has obvious benefits, enabling you to navigate your interpersonal relationships more easily, while also enabling you to evaluate what makes you happy or unhappy.

Traditionally, there are four different factors that are raised when discussing EI.

Perception: Being able to accurately perceive emotions is the first step in achieving higher EI.

This can be through improving your ability to understand body language and facial expressions, but also includes being good at identifying your own emotions.

Perception of emotions forms the foundation for all EI as it acts as a platform for the other three factors.

Using emotions: Harnessing your emotions and the emotions of others to boost various cognitive activities is a valuable skill, whether it is in the workplace or in your private life.

Problem solving, thinking and learning can all be facilitated by emotionally intelligent people who fully capitalise on the changing moods of those around them.

Understanding emotions: This is the ability to comprehend emotional language, and to appreciate the complex relationships between different emotional responses.

With a high EI, you will be able to sense how emotions are evolving over time, putting you in a good position to prevent problems from occurring and being sensitive to changing relationships.

Managing emotions: This can be a difficult skill to master, particularly for those who have a hot temper. But being able to regulate your emotions can be exceptionally valuable in certain situations.

However, those with high EI can also influence the emotions of others, enabling them to boost morale, simmer down arguments and sympathise effectively.

This has a number of benefits in the workplace, enabling you to take control of situations before they get out of hand.
