Better Outcomes through Collaboration in Rail Safety

1 Mar 2017, by Informa Insights

Enhancing Safety through Collaboration is the central theme of the RISSB Rail Safety 2017 Conference, why is collaboration so important across the rail industry? No one person or one organisation knows all the answers or is an expert on everything. By organisations working together around rail safety it brings many strengths and a great deal of experience to the discussion. This can only produce better outcomes” says Sue McCarrey, CEO of the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator.

Together with a host of industry leaders, Ms McCarrey will give a presentation on the first day of the RISSB Rail Safety conference highlighting the importance of ONRSR collaborating with the Australian rail industry. Addressing the presentation title and content she explains that “As a regulator “collaboration” can have a different meaning. I will discuss ONRSR’s education role and how we work with rail organisations to achieve safety outcomes and how we work with the industry as a whole around a national set of standards. I will also discuss where “collaboration” needs to end and where prosecutions and Enforceable Voluntary Undertakings may play a role.”

We are delighted that some of the executive team will also attend and speak at the event as we include the Ask the regulator panel on day 2 of the agenda again for 2017. In explaining the importance of the session and what it will focus on Ms McCarrey says “This is an incredibly important session that allows members of the rail industry to ask any one of the ONRSR Executive a question. It allows us to clarify issues, give direction where there has been confusion. It also provides a great opportunity for us to get feedback from the rail industry on issues they are dealing with.”

ONRSR have a number of key focus areas and goals on their agenda for 2017 and Ms McCarrey explains “We hope to welcome the State of Queensland into the National scheme for the regulation of rail safety and the removal of the Service Level Agreement in NSW. We will also continue working with the State of Victoria on full integration. Our day to day regulatory activities and safety improvement programs continue to focus on the areas of track worker safety, road rail vehicle safety, track condition and rolling stock maintenance.”

The conference will take place at the Pullman King George Square in Brisbane on the 4th and 5th April this year. In addition to speaker presentations Bombardier Transportation will host a pre-conference site tour at their Wulkuraka Maintenance Depot and attendees are invited to the Official Rail Safety Dinner on the evening of the 4th at Hillstone St Lucia. Full details on the conference, the speakers and all additional social functions can be viewed on the conference website.
