A DETAILED study of health services in South Australia’s prisons has outlined improvements needed to better support inmates.
The SA Health report, completed by PricewaterhouseCoopers and released today, recommends changes to prison health services and recommends improvements to mental health support for prisoners in the state’s correctional facilities.
Central Adelaide Local Health Network Executive director of state-wide services Dr Martin Dooland said many recommendations were “relatively simple procedural changes” but other would take significant work over several years to implement.
SA Health has provided a copy of the report to Correctional Services and established a Governance Group to examine the recommendations.
“The high-level governance group is discussing strategies to improve overall health services and to also ensure people with mental health issues receive appropriate care while in prison and (after) release,” Dr Dooland said.
The report was also publicly available to enable consultation with staff, unions and prisoner support groups.
“Their input and support will be required if we are to improve health services in prisons over coming years,” Dr Dooland said.
