Disability services experts discuss NDIS roll-out

2 Dec 2013, by Informa Insights

The market for disability services will undergo major reform under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The NDIS is based on the principle that by giving people with disabilities control over their own funding we will drive a market of services that will cover all needs. At the same time, service users will have individual choice and control over their services.

IIR Healthcare Insights has asked healthcare professionals in the Disability Employment Services Linkedin group if this theory can work in practice and what potential hurdles need to be overcome. The question sparked a lively debate and raised a number of key concerns about the roll-out of the scheme including the sufficiency of the level of funding accompanying individualised support packages, the capacity of those with intellectual/developmental disability to make truly informed choices, how outcomes will be effectively measured, monitored and evaluated, and how there still continues to be a bureaucratic divide between ageing services and disability support. Here are some of the detailed responses we have received:

The roll-out of the NDIS will be one of the central themes to be discussed at the National Disability Summit 2014, to be held on the 17th and 18th March in Melbourne. For more information about the 5th annual event, please visit the National Disability Summit website
