Barbara LennonBarbara Lennon is the Clinical Informatics Education Manager at Austin Health with extensive experience in electronic medication management. She will share her expertise with attendees of the pre-conference workshop at the Electronic Medication Management conference, to be held on the 24 March in Sydney. Barbara will be leading an eMM training workshop on what really works in training multi-disciplinary staff in Electronic Medication Systems, how to get the most for your budget and how to gain ‘buy in’ from senior medical staff. She will also be speaking on the programme of the main conference on how to efficiently train agency staff on eMMs.

Barbara completed nursing training in 1997 in Belfast and then followed her career pathway in ICU.  At that stage a Clinical Information Programme was already implemented in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where she was employed.  This incorporated medication prescribing and administration, along with many other aspects of a medical chart.  In 2008, when the programme was upgraded and a full configuration was required, Barbara was heavily involved in both the configuration and the training aspects of the process.

Later in 2008 Barbara relocated to Australia and took up position as Clinical Applications Specialist in ICU in St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne as they were completing an almost identical upgrade to their Clinical Information Programme. Barbara was responsible for the configuration of this programme and delivery of training.

In 2010 Barbara took up the position as a trainer of the Cerner system in Austin Health, Melbourne and was promoted to Clinical Informatics Education Manager.

Throughout her current role, Austin has had a number of implementations of Cerner modules:

  • The 1st wave of implementations involved the recording of allergies, alerts, diagnosis, past medical history, surgical procedures, patient results, discharge summaries, discharge prescriptions, and ordering pathology and radiology tests.
  • The 2nd implementation occurred a year later and introduced a paperless medication chart to the 3 campuses across Austin Health.
  • The 3rd implementation involved the referral of patients to Allied Health Staff and documentation of outcomes.  The process will continue next year when FirstNet (the ED module) will be available.

More information about the workshop is available on the Electronic Medication Management conference website.
