A new report has indicated that NSW is emerging as a world-class provider of healthcare, with its success built on a foundation of “efficient and effective patient care”.
The Bureau of Health Information (BHI) recently released its ‘Healthcare in Focus 2013: Annual Performance Report’, which compares the healthcare performance of NSW as a state to Australia as a whole, as well as to 10 other leading countries such as the US and Germany. The report reveals that NSW “compares very well internationally” – for example, it boasts the highest proportion (81 per cent) of adults who claim that hospitals ensure they follow up after in-hospital treatment.
In addition, the BHI Patient Survey found that nine in 10 patients in NSW are satisfied with their overall experience in the state’s public hospitals, rating the service as good or very good.
“The performance of our hospitals is testament to the commitment and hard work of our doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and staff,” commented Health Minister Jillian Skinner.
“It is the efforts of our hospital staff coupled with this government’s record investment in health that ensures patients are receiving some of the best health services and outcomes in the world.”
The report also shows that NSW has improved in a variety of key areas over the past few years. For instance, the state’s hospitals have shown marked performance improvements in admitting patients on time for booked surgeries. Data from 2012-13 reveals that this metric saw a rise in all urgency categories, leading to NSW being one of the best performing states in the country.
Post-discharge care was another area in which NSW performed particularly well, with eight out of 10 adult patients having arrangements made for them with community services upon leaving hospital. It is clear to see, then, that follow up services such as hospital in the home could grow in prevalence in NSW and around Australia.
