Close-up: Colin Tutt

10 Jun 2013, by Informa Insights

Colin Tutt CBH GrainWith almost 40 years’ industry experience, Colin Tutt has an extraordinary knowledge and insight of grain supply chains, particularly in Western Australia.

Commencing as a CBH Receival Point Operator, Mr Tutt was appointed General Manager Operations in 1995. His responsibilities include overseeing CBH’s world-class storage and handling operations including grain receivals; road and rail transportation; grain storage, sampling and caretaking; freight for shipping; engineering services; and shipping freight.

It’s interesting to consider the ebbs and flow of the Australian grain industry during Mr Tutt’s career from the decade of drought in the 90s, deregulation in 2008 and last year’s record annual harvest of over 15million tonnes for WA. Following following recent high rainfall, Mr Tutt is optimistic for the 2013-14 harvest: “We do recognise that some areas are still a little bit dry and the rain has been a little bit patchy, but overall we’re very, very pleased.”

Grain operations need be to efficient, resilient and productive especially when you consider that WA producers almost 40 per cent of the national harvest and exports about 80 per cent of this produce. During his career, Mr Tutt has travelled extensively throughout Western Australia and the nation’s wheatbelt regions. He has also examined grain handling networks overseas, including spending time at Viterra, Canada where he gained insight into their more competitive supply chain model.

Time for change

Later this year, Mr Tutt will be commencing as the inaugural General Manager Global Supply Chain with the charter to investigate new ideas from around the globe for grain handling and storage as well as overall supply chain management.

WA_272x70“I have described my time heading up Operations as the best job in WA, and it is, but it is time for change.  The grains industry is changing so rapidly and I am not getting any younger. This new role allows me to transition from the day-to-day functionality of our supply chain to a more strategic consultative role but remain in the business providing support to the team for the medium term,” Mr Tutt said.

Mr Tutt will continue to provide support to the Operations team in addressing below rail issues and will assist Marketing and Trading to identify ways to get grain to global markets by focusing on supply chain innovation beyond Western Australia.

Mr Tutt holds a Diploma in Business Management from Mt Eliza Management College and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

If you’d like to hear more from Mr Tutt he will be speaking at the WA Transport Infrastructure Summit on the 14th August. His presentation will address long-term solutions to grain logistics and focus on CBH’s grain supply co-ordination and transport services.
