Close-Up: Paul Hamersley

8 Jul 2013, by Informa Insights

Paul Hamersley Brookfield RailWith over 17 years public and private sector experience in the Western Australian transport and logistics industry, Paul Hamersley is uniquely qualified to discuss the growth for rail freight in Western Australia. As Brookfield Rail’s General Manager Commercial, Paul has Executive responsibility for Commercial Contracts, Customer Service, Business Development, Property, Network Lease & Regulatory Management and Corporate Affairs.

Brookfield Rail operates approximately 5,500km of standard, narrow and dual gauge rail infrastructure in the southern half of the State – from Geraldton in the north, Leonora and Kalgoorlie in the east and Esperance, Albany and Bunbury to the south – and transports commodities including grain, alumina, bauxite, iron ore and interstate freight as well as passengers on the Perth to Kalgoorlie and Perth to Bunbury lines. Given its size and the location of its resources and communities, rail has always played a fundamental role in opening up Western Australia to industries and opportunities and remains one of the State’s most vital pieces of transport infrastructure.  Since privatisation, Brookfield Rail has invested over $2 billion in the freight rail network and associated infrastructure, transforming the network and building a safe, efficient and reliable piece of transport infrastructure for the future of Western Australia.

WA_272x70Paul joined Brookfield Rail in 2008 as Business Development Manager, where he worked closely with all facets of the business with responsibility for identifying new business opportunities, strategic planning for infrastructure development and the management of key stakeholder relationships. In 2010 the role expanded to include management of public relations and corporate affairs functions. In early 2012 Paul was promoted to his current role where he is with existing and potential customers to manage commercial arrangements and meet the growing demand for open access, multi-user rail infrastructure from the resource and agriculture sectors. A key focus of the role is working collaboratively with customers and operators to improve the performance of individual supply chains, with a focus on transparent and accurate reporting and a shared commitment to identify constraints and implement effective actions to increase whole of supply chain efficiency and tonnes to port.

This includes working with government and industry stakeholders and prior to Brookfield Rail, Paul was on the other side of the fence, spending 12 years in the Western Australian State government advising Ministers for Transport on rail freight, planning and policy matters.

Paul will share his experience at the WA Transport Infrastructure Summit on the 14th August where he will provide an overview of the growth for rail freight in Western Australia.
