Given her professional and political experience, Ivelise is particularly qualified to discuss the qualities and challenges of urban design in Brasília.  Brasília is a World-Heritage listed city with unique urban design and economic activities. Compared to other Brazilian cities, such as São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, Brasília has considerable advantages with regards to its green and sustainable perspectives, however these environmental conditions can also present restrictions for planning and construction works.

The expansion of Brasília’s metro provides a great case study in designing a green rail network expansion.Urban Rail Brazil 2013

Operated by Metro-DF (Companhia do Metropolitano Federal District), Brasília’s subway system carries about 130 thousand users a day, passing between its 24 stations and two lines (Green Line and Orange Line). On completion of the expansion works, the Metro will carry between 15,000 and 18,000 passengers per hr in both directions.
