With light rail stations starting to pop up across the Gold Coast and 75 per cent of the track already laid, it’s not surprising that the CEO behind Queensland’s first light rail system is an extremely experienced leader of organisations and people and an exceptional problem solver with outstanding influencing skills.
The award-winning $1.2 billion Gold Coast Rapid Transit project is being delivered by GoldLinQ and its CEO, Phil Mumford has led complex commercial businesses as Chief Executive Officer for over the last 20 years.
Impact of project on local economy?
The project has injected $170 million to the local economy in 18 months of construction with local companies playing a significant role in their own city building this infrastructure.
“We are hitting targets of more than 90 per cent of workers from the local area and more than 80 per cent of those workers are Gold Coast residents by postcode,” Mr Mumford said.
Project timeline
It was only last September when Phil was in a German factory inspecting construction of the Gold Coast’s first tram and last week, he was there to receive delivery of Bombardier’s FLEXITY 2 tram which are already being tested on the system before passenger services begin mid-2014. With the project on track, he is confident that the project will transform both the city and the traveling habits.
“A good thing I have learnt is most cities find once they build their first light rail they can’t build extensions fast enough to keep up with passenger demand” Mr Mumford said.
The CEO behind the progress
For over the last 20 years, Phil has led complex commercial businesses as Chief Executive Officer. He’s been engaged in the operation of major sea ports and in the construction and operation of toll roads. In these roles he has overseen the planning and construction of large civil and marine infrastructure projects, and major business transformation initiatives.
His achievements have included the review and reform of Board and associated governance processes, negotiation of significant contracts in excess of $2b with multinational vendors, successful management of stakeholders within complex government and private sector environments, organisational restructure and reform, and significant improvement in company commercial performance and business growth.
Most recently Phil has led, as Chief Executive Officer, the delivery of the largest road and bridge construction project in the history of the state of Queensland for Queensland Motorways. This project was delivered significantly ahead of schedule and under budget.
From sea ports, roads and now rail, Phil continues to lead transport projects that are defining transport needs.
Phil will provide an update on the Gold Coast Light Rail Project on Tuesday 22 October 2013 as part of the Queensland Transport Infrastructure Summit in Brisbane.
