New gold mill opens up greater employment opportunities

27 Jun 2014, by Informa Insights

A new $110 million gold mill and treatment plant is set to bring a number of additional mining employment opportunities to residents of the Kalgoorlie region.

Already, the Mungari Mill has created 40 new positions. However, its true value may lie in the fact that it has allowed operator La Mancha to reactivate an open pit mine in White Foil.

The re-opening of the White Foil open pit mine will take the project’s total workforce to 280, with the addition of 30 La Mancha staff and 50 blast and drill contractors.

According to the Western Australian government, the White Foil mine and its neighbouring Frog’s Leg mine have an estimated operating life that will last into 2020, and potentially beyond.

The Mungari Mill is the first new gold plant to be opened in the Kalgoorlie region in more than 20 years. It is expected that the mill will help La Mancha increase total gold production to 160,000 ounces per annum by the end of 2014.

The new site of the Mungari Mill was officially opened by Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion on June 21. The minister noted that he was proud to “support and encourage” WA resources industry opportunities such as this.

“What we see here is the sort of excellence that builds on Western Australia’s rating as the world’s number one mining investment destination,” said Mr Marmion.

“And with the challenges that have faced the gold industry, this investment could not have come at a better time.”

Mr Marmion also commended La Mancha for offering specialised mining training opportunities to workers, that will help them remain safe and productive while working in hazardous environments.

Mining professionals throughout Australia will be looking towards this project and others like it as evidence that Western Australia will remain one of the world’s most critical resource hubs.
