The rise of chronic disease, an ageing population and growing community expectations present some challenging conditions, in which the Australian healthcare sector must not only survive, but thrive.
Delivering sustainable, patient-centred and cost-effective healthcare in this environment, will require a series of paradigmatic shifts over the coming decades – including a move from ‘illness’ to ‘wellness’; and ‘volume’ to ‘value’ based models of care.
Electronic health records (EHR), though controversial, are increasingly being looked at as a means of navigating this change.
By better informing patients and clinicians, proponents argue that EHR will enable a more personalised service, in which patients are empowered to become ‘active partners’ in their own healthcare – as befits the more contemporary models of care which are being explored.
As Australia prepares itself for the arrival of EHR – and the more pervasive digitisation of hospital workflows – the Australian Financial Review Healthcare Summit will hear from Denmark’s national healthcare CEO, Han Erik Henrikson.
Denmark is a global pioneer in eHealth and its healthcare system is widely regarded as a leader in terms of both eHealth integration and overall healthcare delivery – with a solid reputation for patient-centricity.
Despite its strong digital foundation, however, Denmark’s eHealth journey has not been without challenges. A population and market-driven push for eHealth in Denmark for more than two decades, has given rise to a number of eHealth technologies, resulting in a fragmented system.
Like Australia, Denmark will also experience demographic pressures, with the percentage of citizens aged 75 and over expected to double over the next three decades.
To address these challenges, Denmark’s healthcare system is already undergoing a significant reorganisation, with more changes planned as part of its 2018-2022 Digital Health Strategy – its most comprehensive strategy to date.
Presenting at the Australian Financial Review Healthcare 2019 Summit -19 February in Sydney, Mr. Henrikson will discuss progress and pitfalls in Denmark’s pervasive eHealth transition and share details of its 2018-2022 strategy.
