Both the mining industry and the healthcare sector are set to benefit from more than 200 collaborative new research projects funded by the Australian Research Council’s (ARC) Linkage Projects initiative.
The ARC Linkage Projects scheme is a government initiative designed to provide valuable funding to support innovative R&D projects across the country.
Some of the ideas being funded this year include a University of Queensland project that will investigate innovative ways to improve the yield of canola crops, and a joint initiative between the University of South Australia and BHP Billiton Iron Ore Pty Ltd with the aim of tackling sulphide oxidisation mining waste.
Perhaps most exciting is a $499,000 Monash University initiative that will see the institute partner with a number of key health agencies in order to maximise the ‘whole system’ benefits of key health investments.
Minister for Education Christopher Pyne announced these projects on June 27, along with 248 others which will together receive a combined $88 million in funding over the next year.
“It is critical we have opportunities for our researchers to work together with industry and business, who hold the knowledge and are often the end-users or commercialisers of the innovations that flow from research,” said Mr Pyne.
Of the 251 projects in total that were funded this year, 77 came from New South Wales. A further 49 came from Queensland, while 63 were based in Victoria. The University of New South Wales was the most successful individual institution, receiving a grand total of $10,480,983 in funding across 30 projects.
According to the Linkage Projects website, the Linkage Projects scheme was introduced to help initiate strategic development projects, particularly between research institutes and other agencies.
It was also implemented with the aim of helping Australia grow a “national pool of world-class researchers to meet the needs of the broader Australian innovation system”.
