In 2012, the friends and families of the over 700,000 Australians living with an acquired brain injury (ABI) re-named September, “Sidetember” – Re-making the month into a fun initiative to support the work of Brain Injury Australia and its State and Territory Member organisations.
Men are invited to grow and shape their sideburns long and loud, their sisters, wives, mothers, girlfriends and partners are urged to (financially) back them and (artistically) groom them.
Last year, “Sideguys” and “SideGirls” completed amazing tonsorial and other feats to raise $50,000.
2014’s target is $100,000!
So, Brain Injury Australia needs your help, in both registering for “Sidetember” 2014 – at www.sidetember.com – and in spreading the word.
Sidetember 2014 will also feature a range of awareness-raising merchandise – jewellery, baseball caps, t-shirts, stubby holders etc. – for purchase and promotion (all proceeds from sales also support “Sidetember”.
Both Brain Injury Australia and Sidetember are also registered charities, so all donations are tax deductible).
A range of high-profile Australians have come on board to support “Sidetember” including: rugby union Wallaby Tatufu Polota-Nau; Commonwealth Games Gold Medal winning Hockeyroo Rachel Lynch; Australian Paralympic football Vice-Captain Chris Pyne and world champion rower and Olympian and Australian champion cyclist Amber Halliday (both of these outstanding athletes also have an ABI); Michael “MJ” Johnson, founder of The Minneapolis Beard and Moustache Club in the US, a State, National, and World Champion sideburn grower; former New South Wales State of Origin and national Kangaroo rugby league player, and now with The Grill Team on radio station Triple M, Mark Geyer; Jeremy Donovan, Development Director with the Indigenous employment advocacy program, Generation One; and “The Voice’s” Simon Meli.
Sidetember’s 2014 supporters include the staff, clients, students of the Transport Accident Commission in Victoria, Melbourne’s Epworth Rehabilitation, Yooralla, Bunnings, Griffith University in Queensland, Charles Darwin University in the Northern Territory, Newcastle City Council, Advanced Personnel Management, the Maxim Group, Hartley Lifecare in the Australian Capital Territory, Castle Personnel and Families4Families in South Australia.
