What are the key challenges of online retail?

29 Aug 2014, by Informa Insights

Online RetailMichael Vaughan, National Transport Manager at the Super Retail Group recently expressed that:

“The key challenge for online companies over the next few years is ensuring that there is sufficient infrastructure to support customers’ growing requirements.”

Michael manages all freight from six distribution centres for all brands within the Super Retail Group.

At the Online Retail Logistics Conference 2014, which is taking place in Sydney on 18th and 19th November, Michael will be discussing pick and delivery schedules for multi-national businesses. Michael adds that,

“Couriers, logistics functions and speed-to-market remain top concerns for the logistics industry.”

In agreement with Michael is Carl Hartman, CEO of Temando. Due to consumers’ expectations increasing with regards to delivery, Carl states that the key challenge for retailers today is:

“How to offer the shipping experiences that customers demand.”

Temando’s smart shipping software provides a central location for fulfilment across multiple eCommerce platforms.  Carl explains that,

“One of the key benefits of the Temando platform is the ability to curate shipping experiences. Creating an experience customers value can result in material increases in conversion rates, while lowering costs at the same time.”

At the conference Carl will be discussing how the use of technology increases the effectiveness and efficiency of fulfilment models. When asked which presentation Carl was also looking forward to, he replied, “Michael Vaughan’s. SRG is one of Australia’s most innovative retailers, developing unique solutions for their global operation.”

David Shafer, Executive Director at Kogan.com, is delivering a keynote presentation at the Online Retail Logistics Conference. David states that another key challenge for online retailers will be learning how to take advantage of all the opportunities made available through international logistics networks.

“If you don’t take advantage of them, your competitors will!”

At the conference, David will discuss the importance of focusing on the core competitive advantage of your business.

“Too many retailers lose sight of this as they grow, and this affects their strength as a business, as well as the shopping experience for consumers.”

Logistics is key to the success of the online retail industry.

The Online Retail Logistics Conference will explore challenges that retailers face in working with their supply chains, with industry figures sharing their knowledge and expertise to help you unlock the potential of online sales.

Included in the conference will be lessons on optimizing conversion rates through use of all social media platforms, ensuring that your logistics model is a success “from click through to delivery”. We will also discuss the impact of global entities on domestic online retailers and take a look into the future for parcel logistics.
