Mr Peter L. Field, FRACS, is a Vascular Surgeon at the Royal Melbourne and Epworth Hospitals and Chairman of the Victorian Surgical Consultative Council.
Peter will be speaking at the 2nd annual Managing the Deteriorating Patient Conference, taking place on the 22nd and 23rd September, at Novotel Melbourne on Collins, on the topic “Surgical Patient Deterioration: The Victorian Hospitals Universal Post-Operative Orders Form and Importance of Clinical Outcomes Audit”.
Some of the key areas in patient deterioration that Peter will be addressing include the needs of surgical patients pre and post-operation, the importance of VASM and VSCC, the complications in the post-operative ward and audit loop.
Peter headed the Vascular Surgery Unit at Royal Melbourne Hospital from 1989 to 2005, with private practice at Epworth Hospital. He has been a trainer and examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and President of the ANZ Society for Vascular Surgery.
He has promoted audit and knowledge of one’s clinical outcomes as a professional obligation for surgeons, and has served for six years on the Victorian Surgical Consultative Council, looking at our surgical outcomes, near-misses and adverse events.
His other interests include carotid and thoracoabdominal aortic surgery, dialysis and renal transplants, autologous blood transfusion, endovascular surgery, and the development of the Melbourne’s biologically-engineered collagen artery – the Omniflow graft.
On why earlier detection of patients in clinical decline is important, Peter said,
“Audits of surgical patient care continue to show delayed or inadequate responses to deterioration, so we need better ways to recognise and respond.
We can start by remembering the golden rules of professional health care.”
