Changing the ‘channel mentality’ in online retail

7 Nov 2014, by Informa Insights

The Online Retail Logistics Conference  is less than two weeks away! Taking place from 18-19 November, this important event for the online retail sector will explore the challenges that retailers face in taking a sale from click to delivery -working with their supply chains and managing logistics. Key industry figures will share their knowledge and expertise to help delegates unlock the potential of online sales. Paul Greenberg

One of these experts is Paul Greenberg, Executive Chairman of the National Online Retailers Association (NORA) and co-founder of DealsDirect. He also acts as a non-executive director and advisor for several companies.

We talked to Paul about the challenges that NORA faces over the next year. Paul explained that “one of the key challenges is the fact that the term online retail has come to the end of its shelf life”. Paul went on to explain that “no one is off line anymore, and there is a growing need to think less by which channel to use, and more by brand. Customers think by brand, not by channel, and so should we”.

NORA faces all the challenges that most new start-ups do, including resource, prioritising, funding, harnessing stakeholders around a common vision and, more notably for membership-based organisations, establishing clear benefits for members. “We have had to do more with less, the goal being to build something with nothing, and this could not be achieved without the enormous support of team members, board members and contributory members”.

Paul acknowledges that retail in particular is a competitive industry, yet it is also a passionate one. NORA’s strapline “the voice of new retail” speaks volumes about its aims within the industry. At NORA, it is understood that what used to work for the industry no longer works for its customers. The industry needs to be forward thinking and au courant with the latest technology.

At the Online Retail Logistics Conference Paul is looking forward to hearing from Michael Vaughan (Super Retail Group), Tony Nash (Booktopia) and David Shafer (Kogan.com). “The Super Retail Group is an iconic Australian retailer, leading the way in agility, and adopting best practice in technology and supply chain. They are simply great retailers and I’m a huge fan of what they have done,” Paul says.

Paul also commends David Shafer as “a lot of the brain behind Kogan.com. Shafer represents the best in entrepreneurship and new retail, being customer-centric.”

“Booktopia is an inspiration to the industry. No one could have predicted their success and certainly did not predict that they would be able to compete against online retail giant Amazon. It goes to show that Australians support good retail.”

Paul will be speaking on Day One (18 November) of the Online Retail Logistics Conference and we look forward to hearing about an omni channel brand experience and how online retailers can keep up with the trend. Register now!
