Wind energy myths debunked

21 Sep 2012, by Informa Insights

Australia has many of the world’s best wind resources. With the 20/20 RET and CPRS (Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme), the prevalence for wind and the percentage wind contributes to our total energy should be higher. Yet public opposition to wind farms in Australia is enormous.

Claims of adverse health impacts and reduced land values have spurred community groups into action with many wind farms failing to get approval and recent rulings the three states which will severely hamper future wind farms.

Media coverage is often sensationalist and negative, yet with all the negative publicity, there are still many wind farms being approved and built.

Australia as the highest emitter of greenhouse gas per capita in the developed world, the growing public environmental conscience for cleaner renewable energy is now a national priority. The Australian Federal government’s commitment to securing renewable and sustainable energy resources by 2020, has the potential to make a much needed impact on our energy sector.

South Australia leads Australia in the creation and investment into cleaner renewable energy. South Australia includes 47% of the installed wind capacity in Australia and generates more than 25% of total power from wind. Additionally, South Australia is positioning itself to generate clean renewable power for the national grid. A recent feasibility study released by Macquarie Capital further adds to South Australia’s importance as a significant green energy power house.

The 8th Australian Wind Energy conference will analyse developments of regional energy strategies, business opportunities and advances in wind turbine technology and scientific development while simultaneously addressing issues such as site identification, land use agreements and environmental impact assessments.
