Spotlight: Redlands City Council
Infrastructure plays a key role for Redland’s growth.
Located on picturesque Moreton Bay in south-east Queensland, the city includes rural and the many island communities such as North Stradbroke Island, Russell Island, Macleay Island, Lamb Island, Karragarra Island and Coochiemudlo Island. An extra 40,000 people are expected to call Redlands home by 2030 and to cater for this growth, the city is undertaking a bold new era of development with a number of major projects including the Cleveland CBD revitalisation, Capalaba CBD master plan, Toondah Harbour and Weinam Creek redevelopments and an exciting health and wellbeing precinct. Like all developments, these projects need investment and the city is committed to building partnerships to “make them happen”.
Fast-tracking infrastructure development: Toondah Harbour & Weinam Creek
Earlier this year, planning for dynamic seaside and transit precincts at both Toondah Harbour at Cleveland and Weinam Creek at Redland Bay were fast-tracked with formal recognition of the projects as Priority Development Areas by the Queensland Government.
“These precincts are a key component in our strategy to drive investment and create new jobs so this marks a coming of age for Redland City. The result will be new jobs for Redlanders, exciting new facilities, and the chance to showcase all we have to offer as the gateway to iconic North Stradbroke and the Southern Moreton Bay islands” Cr Karen Williams, Mayor of Redland City Council said.
She continued, “There’s a positive vibe rolling out across Redland City and it’s important that we all do our bit to maintain the momentum.”
Open for business and investment
To continue this momentum, Mayor Williams has taken this message that Redlands is open for business and investment to Asia with a trade mission to Taiwan, China and Japan.
“We have to make sure we invest our finite resources wisely right across our organisation. This is particularly important at the ‘sharp end’, where we deliver customer service that is valued by our residents and “external” customers.” Mayor Williams believes that this trade visit “will open a gateway into new markets and opportunities while enhancing the Redlands’ reputation as a great place to do business and to invest”.
“There are increasing pressures on councils to make ends meet with fewer resources while at the same time continuing to deliver for their residents, businesses and investors.”
“Internally, over the past year we have made some tough decisions about what is core business and what is not. We have transitioned out of areas that are not core business so we can focus on service delivery.”
“This brought with it a need to look more objectively at how we are structured and what is required for us to do our business more efficiently and cost-effectively.”
Mayor Williams will provide an update on the Toondah Harbour and Weinam Creek projects when she returns from her

Cr Williams was elected as Mayor of Redland City Council in April 2012 and having worked for 10 years in the domestic money market both in Sydney and Brisbane, offers real-world business experience to the role. First elected as Divisional Councillor for Division 9 Capalaba in 2004, she prides herself on having a strong, caring and inclusive community focus and a passion to preserve the sense of community and security she’s experienced through her life in the Redlands.
