Dr Scott Bensley is currently the Principal Metallurgist Processing – Resource Development/Metallurgical Development, Rio Tinto Iron Ore.
After graduating from Mineral Processing at the University of Queensland in 1993, Scott took a graduate metallurgist position at Tarong Coal near Nanango Queensland. During these first 2 years, he completed a 7 month secondment to the Century Zinc Bulk Sample Plant – the first of many pilot plants to come. Following this, Scott moved to Melbourne to work in the CRA Advanced Technical Development Coal and Minerals Processing Divisions until 1999. Here he enjoyed secondments to Colombian and Brazilian coal projects in addition to getting his first taste of iron ore pilot testwork on the future Nammuldi Below Water Table Iron Ore Processing plant.
In late 1999, Scott moved to Tom Price where he immersed himself in projects such as the Tom Price Spirals plant at the concentrator and modifications to the Paraburdoo fines further processing plant.
In 2003, Scott was seconded to the Resource Development Division of Rio Tinto Iron Ore to run the Yandicoogina Low grade scrubbing pilot plant. He then embarked on a number of study roles including Hope Downs and Western Turner Syncline in addition to further pilot testwork which he spoke about at FeTech 2013.
We are delighted to welcome Scott back to FeTech 2014, where he will be discussing his experience with the commissioning and calibration of the online analyser at Brockman 4.
The BS4 Mine is located in the Central Pilbara region of Western Australia, approximately 60 km NW of Tom Price and 300 km SE of Dampier. During the second phase of expansion, the mine moved from 22 to 36Mtpa and an additional primary crusher was built along with an overland conveyor and on line analyser, which was installed on the phase 2 crusher overland conveyor to measure Iron, Silica, Alumina, Manganese and Moisture.
The analyser was calibrated and commissioned successfully early in 2014. Scott’s presentation will look at the process, difficulties and initial validation results.
If you would like to hear more from Scott, you can join him this November in Perth for FeTech 2014.
