Conflict intelligence (CI): Connecting with conflict

8 May 2015, by Informa Insights

Fighting Fair‘s Scott Dutton, a Nationally Accredited Mediator, Trainer and fighting-fair-scott-square-bluePresenter joined us to discuss the 3Cs needed to connect with conflict: curiosity, collaboration and creativity. Scott holds that conflict is an opportunity for transformation and growth. Reflecting on his broad experience with clients across both community and corporate sectors, Scott highlighted the psychological and practical considerations of conflict resolution. Whether it’s conflict at work with colleagues or  clients or at home with family or friends, we often react to conflict in predictable and unhelpful ways. However, with the development of Conflict Intelligence (CI), we can begin to make conscious choices on how to respond, rather than just react.

Here’s a preview of some of the helpful hints shared in our discussion.

1. The way conflict is managed in the workplace impacts on the workplace culture. Managing conflict promptly and proactively reinforces the value you place in both individuals )and the team) and often prevents the situation (and costs) from escalating.

2. Conflict is addressed more effectively by bringing in the ‘The Mediator Mindset’. Whether the situation requires you to have a difficult conversation with another or to mediate a volatile conflict situation, both scenarios will benefit by a mediator mindset approach.

3. The development and practice of Conflict Intelligence (CI) will assist you to:

  • Understand the dynamics of conflict
  • Assess the relevant changes
  • Choose the appropriate skills/strategies for resolution

4. Try to work together and collaborate. Although many in conflict will endeavour to try to ‘win’, a collaborative approach will assist in the creation and commitment to a sustainable solution.

Scott will be discussing conflict resolution at the Community Workers Forum in Melbourne this July. His session on the 30 July will focus on an understanding of conflict and introduction to the skills and knowledge necessary for an empowering and sustainable resolution.
