A group of defence and related companies will share $14 million to boost the skills of their workforce.
Defence Materiel Minister Jason Clare said that included up to $1.4 million to support approximately 250 apprentices in aerospace, engineering fabrication and electro-technology.
“Like a lot of sectors in the economy, defence companies are competing with the mining industry for skilled workers,” Mr Clare said in a statement.

“As we replace more defence equipment over the next decade, we will need skilled workers to help build and sustain that equipment.”
Visiting shipbuilder Austal in Perth on Tuesday, Mr Clare said the money would go to 109 companies for more than 4000 training places.
He said defence had already committed up to $588,000 to Austal for training apprentices and for skills development of qualified technical and professional staff.
“”Over the next decade we will invest $138 million to boost skills and improve training in the defence industry,” he said.
