Implementing and managing improvement strategies in the perioperative setting is crucial to meeting safety and quality standards. Management of operating rooms requires the coordination of human and material resources to maximise efficiency, cost effectiveness, and patient safety. Collaboration and collective responsibility are key elements to effective OR management. Understanding your workforce and the theatre workplace culture is an integral aspect of this. The annual Operating Theatre Management Conference is the only event in Australia specifically for operating room and perioperative management professionals. We have made some of the presentations from the 2012 conference available for viewing and download.
1) Safe Medication Administration on the Sterile Field: Sterile Label Trial at Calvary Wakefield Hospital
Calvary Wakefield Hospital in South Australia commenced implementation of the ACSQHC National Recommendations for User-applied Labelling of Injectable Medicines, Fluids and Lines in July 2011. Delays in the implementation of use of the sterile label on the sterile field in the Perioperative Suite occurred due to the inability to source the “Abbreviated Container Label” sterile and ready for use.
With the aim of facilitating the introduction of the Labelling for Medication Safety Recommendations within perioperative sterile field and to ensure compliance to the recommendations within the busy peri-operative arena by making the process simple and user friendly, Calvary Wakefield Hospital developed the concept a pre-printed label sheet, which has been produced in conjunction with Ian Glasson from StirlingFILDES.
Late 2011 CWH sought support from the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care to run a Sterile Label Trial to test of the proposed sterile label sheet to determine whether the label would be appropriate for use within a sterile field. The trial was commenced in March and completed early June 2012 and while further analysis of the data is still being completed at the time of this abstract the initial review is positive with successful outcomes achieved.
