Housing bubble an ever growing risk

30 Apr 2012, by Informa Insights

In today’s economic climate, Australia’s housing market is placed under consistent scrutiny as prices edge towards unaffordable levels compounded with the ever growing risk of a housing bubble. Australia’s situation is unique due to the coastal population centers and booming population. Various stimulus packages have helped first time buyers gain a foothold on the property ladder, but with the withdrawal of the first time buyers grant, more responsibility has been placed with state governments to helps first home buyers more competitive.

2012 has started with a decline of growth – particularly in the capital cities. Though interest rates have helped relieve mortgage stress, a crisis of confidence is showing as the world economy borders uncertainty, and a greater percentage of the average person’s wage is eaten away by mortgages.

Alternative financing options are becoming common, as is a changing social demographic and the more young adults who are fleeing the nest at a later time than the previous generation.

With the housing market under close scrutiny, Informa’s 7th Annual Housing Congress helps those involved gain a greater understanding of how certain changes and initiatives will help them. The Congress has been running for 7 years, and is becoming a staple event for repeat delegates. Though a repeat event, the housing market can change dramatically within a year, and so people expect the Housing Congress to bring to light current issues impacting their position with the housing market.

This year’s Congress will focus on these topics:
• Revitalising the residential housing industry
• Housing shortage crises
• Australia’s changing demography and what it means for housing affordability
• The economic outlook and its impact on housing
• Housing crisis and the macroeconomic climate
• The market for the first time buyers
• Alternative options for first home buyers
• Confidence as a barrier to entry
• Economic sustainability of community-driven housing developments in urban Australia
• Community Housing in Western Sydney
• Affordability and community housing
• Mortgage stress in a cautious housing market
• Sustainability in housing development
• The National Partnerships and Remote Indigenous Housing
• Specialist housing – aged care facility development
• Reform and legislation in NSW
• Student housing
