Karen Lunn, Executive Director of the Australian Ladies Professional Golf Association (ALPG), former Women’s British Open Champion and Chairman of the Ladies European Tour shared with us how she envisages the future of women in sport:
What is the #1 change you would like to see for women in sport in the next decade?
Karen: I would really like to see women’s sport receive more television coverage, which would generate bigger prize money for events and endorsements for the athletes. It has been great to watch the ANZ Championship Netball on TV this year.
What is the #1 thing that we can do to increase female participation in sport?
Karen: I believe that we need more women role models and coaches in sport in Australia. Coaching across the board seems to be male dominated. I know that from my experiences in golf, women like and sometimes feel more comfortable being taught by other women. Also in golf in particular it is difficult for many working women to play golf on weekends and at many clubs it is almost impossible for them to play on Saturdays.
What is the biggest change you’d like to see in women’s representation on sports boards?
Karen: Of course it would be great to have more women on boards of Women’s Sporting Organisations but also to have women on boards of Men’s Sporting Organisations and Sports Organisations that govern both Men and Women under the one umbrella. There are so many successful women in the business world who have so much to offer but for some reason they do not seem to be finding their way onto these boards.
